Progress Update – May 2021

This was a fairly productive month. One of my main achievements this month was sorting through a few ongoing projects and organising them into units, as well as ordering a few bits here and there to fill the gaps. I know have several piles of units in their own baggies that I can just grab and start painting as I wish, without having to rummage through and get all the different parts each time. Means I can also do a bit of a lucky dip if I’m not sure what I feel like painting.

One of my ongoing goals is to finish up my ECW forces rebasing and expansion. Here are a few more rebased units:

Prince Rupert’s Bluecoats and the Kings Lifeguard of Foot
The Northern Horse (Royalist), Edward Whalley’s (Parliamentarian), and Sir William Vaughn’s (Royalist)

And a freshly painted one:

Lord Kerry’s/Duke of York’s Regiment of Foot (Royalist)

And another rag tag bunch of Royalists:

Sir Theophilus Gilbey’s Regiment of Foot (Royalist)

Then I have several more in the painting queue to round out the rest. I’m looking forward to painting the Royalist foot units as they’re a bit more colourful, but I’m not looking forward to the many many horse units that need painted still!

Another project that I’d like to get things moving on again is the Trojan War one, so here are two units of Archaean foot, some of the figures I’d painted a while ago and some are fresh:

Note that the basing here is not final. As one of my aims is to make a proper battle board for this one I’d like to match the basing all together, so just giving these a light sandy base then will add flocking, etc on afterwards once I settle on the right mix for both the bases and the board. I’m also not entirely happy with the figure mix here and have since bought a few more packs to add some variety. It seems that fighting in the period was a mix of longer thrusting spears and shorter throwing spears, so want to reflect that diversity, though will perhaps have some “all spearmen” and “all javelinmen” units to suit game rules.

Onto the Classical Period, a couple of smaller base projects I wanted to get on the go.

Greek Hoplites:

Some Greek psiloi:

My first base of Imperial Roman legionaries, going with the classic red look:

I didn’t use any washes on these. It speeds up the painting time as since they’re mostly armour and shields I don’t think it adds much. I may try a wash on the fur, but they look fine in person (the bright light just disguises the different brown tones in it).

Some Roman Aux:

And finally some wild looking Celts:

Next up on the painting sticks I have some more from the Trojan War then will see where the muse takes me after that. I’ve also been tinkering on and off with some of my homebrew rules, so I may squeeze some posts out of them in the near future. I’ve also started up another blog related to one of my other interests, food, since we all like to eat, which you can find here: mmcv.food.blog.

Thanks for reading,

Matthew

    1. Thanks, I try and give the basing a bit of interest so it appeals nicely to the whole look, especially with smaller scales. I intend to make some basic battle boards at some point in the future to match in with some of the basing styles a bit better so they look nicer than just a green cloth as well. Then if that goes well a bigger, more styled one for the Trojan War project. We shall have to see if my ambitions match up with reality though!
